The Number #1 Provider of Residential Handyman Services!

AN INTERVIEW WITH: Handyman Connection

What do you do when you have a room that needs painting and a door that needs replacing? What if you’d like to have a new tile backsplash installed in the kitchen and ceiling fan installed in the dining room? Some projects are not big enough for a contractor but are just too much to handle yourself and that’s where Handyman Connection comes into the picture.

Scott Oaks, Director of Franchise Development at Handyman Connection of Cincinnati, Ohio, says the company quickly found its niche helping homeowners with the multitude of projects that go undone until they find the time or talent to complete them.

Handyman Connection started business in 1990 and began franchising in 1993. They have 162 markets in the U.S. and Canada, owned by 104 franchisees. Their target demographic falls into two categories: adults 25-54 (leaning more toward a female audience), and adults 55 & older.

A franchisee is typically an owner-operator of their business. The business can be established with little overhead as only a non-retail office space is needed and the business can be run with one or two employees. The tradesmen work for the franchisee on a contract basis. This means they can work the days/hours they want and the franchisee is free to use them as much or little as they want.

“Our business is event driven,” says Oaks. “We need to react when a customer decides to replace a shower or when they need to fix a hole in the wall. What we can do to make this a good experience for our customers is several-fold. First, we can usually do the work right after we give them the estimate, saving them time and inconvenience. We can also do several projects together. They don’t need to call a painter and a carpenter for a project. If we can, we will select a craftsman who can do both jobs. Finally, we don’t charge by the hour but by the project. If a three-hour job takes four hours, the client doesn’t wonder if the craftsman is delaying the job to make more money.”

The size of the jobs Handyman Connection specialize in range from $500 -$2,000. They can accomplish a large range of projects, including carpentry (fences, decks, sheds, replacing doors and cabinets, installing crown molding and countertops); interior and exterior painting; drywall installation and repair; window and door replacement; and tile work like back splashes, showers and floors. Depending on regulations in the franchisee’s area, they may also offer services such as electrical and plumbing repair and replacement.

Handyman Connection covers their work with a one-year written guarantee and has a high repeat customer base. “We offer our customers peace of mind in knowing that the work will be done right and will be done within a reasonable timeframe – often in one day. The people we use have extensive experience in their field, usually ten years or more. In addition, we thoroughly screen all of our craftsmen and do background checks so customer can feel secure having them in their home,” says Oaks.

“The franchisee,” says Oaks, “will not need to have a trade background but will have an interest in home improvement/repairs and a passion for owning a business.” A successful Handyman Connection franchisee will enjoy people and have top-notch customer service skills. Attention to detail and the drive to succeed are other important attributes.

Training for new franchisees is provided with two weeks of classroom and hands-on experience at the corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is followed with an additional week of training at the franchisee’s location. “We help our franchise partners with most of the details of the new business,” says Oaks, “such as marketing and PR, scheduling software and training to best estimate projects, and the recruiting of the trades people. Through regional and national conventions, and a proprietary franchisee-wide intranet, we also make sure our new partners connect with their fellow franchisees because these are the people who have a wealth of knowledge and experience to offer.

“We know what tools and support it takes to make our franchise partners successful and we work to make that happen,” adds Oaks. “It’s our goal to help franchisees take their business to the next level and to build value in their franchises for their future.”
