
Brent Schmick, president of BounceU, and his wife, Carron, faced a problem many parents encounter: what to do for their children’s birthdays. As Brent explains, they’d already done the McDonald's Playland™, Chuck E. Cheese, and various ice and roller skating activities. While these places were okay it was time for a change and the Schmicks were looking for something that would be different, fun, safe, and exciting for their kids.
Because they couldn’t find what they were looking for, the Schmicks decided to open BounceU, an indoor stadium filled with giant inflatable structures that offer kids of all ages a safe place to engage in fun, physical activities. The initial location was opened in Gilbert, Arizona in the summer of 2003 and was quickly embraced by their community. BounceU began Franchising in September of 2004 and they already have 8 locations open and will have a total of 15 locations by the end of 2006.
“We are all about offering superior customer service to parents and an awesome play experience for the children,” says Brent. “It’s the very thing lacking in most birthday party venues. Our staff does everything – from playing with the children, to serving the food, to writing down who gave what gift to the guest of honor. We take care of all the details and we even help carry out the gifts to the car! What could be better?”
It is this attention to detail that makes the parties so successful – for both the children and the parents. “We work on creating memories,” says Brent. “When families leave, they have enjoyed a positive, joyful experience together, with no work involved. On top of that, the guests at the party tell their parents about the experience and they become your next customers.”
Of course, the staff providing this great service is very important and BounceU trains their franchisees to hire only the right people. At BounceU, the average employee stays over a year, so BounceU’s proprietary selection process has worked very well. “If you select the right people,” says Brent, “they become successful at what they do and that keeps the business successful.”
BounceU uses its site selection system to work with each franchisee in selecting and approving the best location in the desired territory. “The nice thing about our business,” says Schmick, “is that this isn’t just for small children. We appeal to higher age groups; we’ve hosted such events as rehearsal dinners, family reunions and parties for teens after prom. We have a host of play structures – designed to entertain everyone from small ones to adults. We want to be the Community Meeting Place where everyone wants to come.”
BounceU has been successful, says Schmick, because they provide the experience people are looking for in their celebrations.
