Proforma Systems Advantage Helps 250 Foster Children Make a Fresh Start
Foster children and parents in Allen County, Ohio, are transitioning easier due to a project spearheaded by the 2006 class of the Allen Lima Leadership Program. Bob McPheron, Owner of Proforma Systems Advantage and participant in the program, helped develop and fulfill the Love Luggage Project. The project provides necessities, such as backpacks and toiletries, to children entering foster care. Two hundred and fifty backpacks were assembled for Allen County Children Services this year.
“When Children Services steps in to help a child, it is not uncommon for the child to leave the situation with almost no belongings,” begins McPheron. “The children are confused and foster parents are scrambling to make their homes welcoming. It’s easy to miss some of the basics. This project helps everyone start off on the right foot.”
Proforma Systems Advantage was able to source and negotiate a reduced price on 250 rolling backpacks to be used for the project. The backpacks were stuffed with hygiene items and toys made by students at a local university. Honors students from Bath High School and volunteers from the local First Evangelical Reformed Church filled the backpacks at the Proforma Systems Advantage warehouse in early March. Rolling backpacks were chosen because they could double as normal school backpacks.
“The community really stepped up to help,” says McPheron. “We received monetary donations to purchase the toiletries and were even able to include gift certificates from local eateries for those times when foster parents don’t have the time to cook.”
McPheron and his colleagues in the Allen Lima Leadership Program are hopeful that this project will be spread to other communities. “We’ve heard that Children Services in Toledo , Ohio , is interested in running a similar program,” says McPheron. “We’ve also already begun planning next year’s event here in Lima . We’re working on how we can make it bigger and better.”
