Franchise News Release: Littleton, CO - (Apr-16-2003) Maui Wowi Acts Proactively to Avert Growing Pains - Booming Franchise Expands Executive TeamMaui Wowi is growing up, right before the watchful and envious eyes of the entire Franchising and quick Restaurant service industries. Twenty years ago, in its "infancy" phase, Maui Wowi's founding couple spent late nights mixing 30-gallon kettles of a little-known product called fresh fruit smoothies to satisfy curious crowds at outdoor events. As a toddler, they franchised the concept. During Maui Wowi's "childhood," CEO Michael Haith, a seasoned veteran in the special event, food & beverage industry, successfully took to the company to the next level, expanding its product line and tripling growth with aggressive marketing, brand recognition programs and Franchise support. Today, in what company executives characterize as a growth phase, Maui Wowi Fresh Hawaiian Blends is now known as the leading franchisor of Hawaiian Blend gourmet, all-natural refreshments, with more than 225 units operating in 41 states and Puerto Rico. In a proactive move to prevent the growing pains typically associated with this phase of development, Maui Wowi recently named Mark Challis, a franchise industry veteran with particular expertise in legal and financial operations, as president, along with a management team of experienced franchise professionals. "Our growing management team is now equipped to effectively handle the company's tremendous growth," Haith said. "With Mark Challis' track record in franchising, we are poised to reach new heights with a strategic vision for future development." Challis who previously served as vice president of Evolving Systems, Inc., also was president and CEO of The Packaging Store and held various management positions at Price Waterhouse, LLP.In one of his first moves at Maui Wowi, Challis announced a Director of Regional Support (DRS) Program offering throughout the United States. The program offers investors with strong business building backgrounds or previous franchising system experience the opportunity to purchase an exclusive territory with Maui Wowi that provides various types of income streams. Challis said Maui Wowi tested the program with six DRS operating successfully before deciding to implement it throughout the system. "The DRS program will provide more focused local support for existing franchisees, add another support level with the home office and expand opportunities for potential locations and venues," Challis said. "The program will further progress Maui Wowi from grass roots to a solid national presence, while multiplying support efforts and strengthening the brand." Each DRS will assist franchisees with location selection, lease negotiations, construction supervision, grand openings, store training, promotions and operational support needed for proper territory management. In addition, DRS will work with the home office to acquire locations for franchisees and train Franchises in exclusive territories. Maui Wowi plans to add 40 DRS territories in 2003 and to be completely sold out for territories within two years. The ideal candidate for a DRS position with Maui Wowi will have a strong business building background and experience in sales and marketing. According to Challis, mentoring and coaching skills are key. In addition to the DRS program, Maui Wowi also recently announced that in addition to kiosks, it will add fixed storefront locations to its franchise system in certain markets. The first two opened earlier this year in Dearborn, MI and Auburn Hills, MI. Maui Wowi, the leading franchisor of Hawaiian Blend gourmet, all-natural refreshments sold at kiosks nationwide, has more than 225 units operating in 41 states and Puerto Rico with expansion plans to 500 units in 30 international countries by the end of 2003. In addition to smoothies and Kona Espresso drinks, they've also added Maui Wowi Smoothie Rip- Sticks?, all natural, fat-free, squeeze-ups made up of all fruit and yogurt in addition to its signature all natural pre-blended smoothies (an all-natural blend of fresh fruit, non-fat yogurt). Maui Wowi was rated number 38 in the category of fastest growing franchises on the Entrepreneur Magazine Franchise 500® list.
