NiteLites Outdoor Lighting Fixtures Makes the List on International Dark Sky Website

The International Dark Sky Association is a membership-based non-profit organization.  Their mission is to work to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting.  The association’s approach to this goal is to encourage outdoor lighting manufacturers and planners to utilize fixtures which do not emit light that shines above the fixture itself as well as for the fixtures to be low voltage.  In general, their position is that all outdoor fixtures should be fully shielded and installed in such a way that no light is emitted above the lowest part of the fixture.  In this way, excessive glare, light trespass, and light pollution are minimized. 

To determine whether an outdoor lighting project is Dark Sky compliant, the association offers six questions – Is the lighting pleasant?  Is the lighting neighborly (does it provide light without intruding on a neighbor’s privacy)?  Does the lighting aid visibility for the area it is intended to light?  Does the lighting provide safety and security?  Does the lighting, while performing its function, conserve energy?  Does the lighting protect the night sky?   Good lighting, by the Dark Sky Association’s definition, provides lights where they are needed, when they are needed, and uses energy efficient sources for that light.

NiteLites low voltage lighting systems consume approximately 1/3 less energy than systems that use line (120V) voltage.  Low voltage systems have another distinct advantage over line volt systems in that they are much more flexible when applying the light to the object that is intended to be featured.  Many of NiteLites lighting fixtures are designed with shields which prevent light from rising above the fixture, including fixtures which have gained the Dark Sky Association’s seal of approval.  And many of NiteLites fixtures are designed and installed to shine downward, thereby minimizing light pollution.
