While attending the show, be sure to stop at the NiteLites booth where Bill Garland and his staff will show his spectacular photos of homes and landscapes illuminated by a NiteLites outdoor lighting system. Mr. Garland will also discuss how to expand one's living and entertaining areas without costly construction.

With more and more homeowners trying to maximize their home's living and entertainment space, it's no wonder that the home construction and renovation business is booming. Remodeling or expanding the existing structure is one option available to the homeowner, but not the only option. By assessing the existing property, and adding landscape lighting, new living and entertaining spaces can be created without spending thousands of dollars.

Now is a good time to reflect on the past season with regard to the existing property. What areas were used extensively? What areas, like decks, patios, or gardens, were seldom used, or not used at all, especially once the sun went down? Often, these areas go under-used, even though they are an integral part of the property. What can be done to make better use of these areas is both simple, and less expensive than a construction project.

To make the under used areas of a property more inviting, and to add to the property's overall ambience, an excellent option is architecture and landscape lighting. When lit, decks and patios are an extension of the indoor living area. Colors and shapes in a garden come to life. Statue, ponds, gazebos become a focal point. In short, the addition of lights maximizes the space available.

While this sounds simple enough, there is a wide variety of lighting fixtures and lighting techniques to consider. Fixtures can range from dim lights used to gently illuminate a pathway for safety reasons, to bright security lights to illuminate larger areas. Techniques can include lights aimed to highlight a trees branches or foliage, or lights aimed downward to create a moonlight effect. If a pond or small waterfall is a part of the garden, underwater lights create an extraordinary effect. There are many other methods that can be used to accent a desired area, structure, or plant.

The homeowner can attempt to create the desired effect. This would entail knowing the areas of the property that would be lighted, the correct way to light those areas, and the know-how to install the lighting system. Another way to utilize lighting to expand the living and entertaining area is to hire a professional who has the training and experience to design the project, integrate the homeowner's ideas into the project, and complete the installation. In this way the proper (and most effective) fixtures and techniques would be incorporated, along with a warranty on the parts and service, and a maintenance plan to ensure the ongoing enjoyment of the completed job.

Among the many companies that offer architecture and landscape lighting, how does the homeowner make the right choice? Since high quality, professionally installed lighting systems often start at $2500.00 and may go much higher, NiteLites recommends researching to find a reliable company with national presence that will stand behind its warranty. Since trees, shrubs, and grasses grow, and wind and other elements can wreak havoc with lighting systems, NiteLites states that it is also important to find a company that offers a viable maintenance program to keep the lighting investment operational year round.

President and CEO Thomas A. Frederick of NiteLites Franchise Systems, Inc. explains the process this way "Start with a (landscape lighting) company that will show you exactly how your property will look after lights are installed, review the written estimate and the warranty. Then check references, drive by some projects lit by the company, and finally research the size and longevity of the company standing behind the lighting system." He also added that perhaps as much as 25% o their work comes from people who bought systems that no longer work, and that often the original company is no longer in business.
