The Pesky Pests Problem

During the summer, outdoor parties and barbecues provide a way to enjoy warm weather and time with friends.

But uninvited guests often arrive at those get-togethers and ruin a good time - mosquitoes.

Lin Hadley of Vernon Hills said she has found a solution to that pesky pest problem with MosquitoNix, a Texas-based company that installs misting systems to protect against mosquitoes and other insects.

"Who wouldn't want this system?" Hadley said. "It's for the health of your family and to be able to use your backyard."

Hadley's backyard has a hot tub, a barbecue, a cabana, a pool, landscaping and a patio with tables and chairs. And she can't wait to get out there and use it.

"I'm going to definitely entertain, and my family will use it every night," she said. "People here have great yards, but I never see anyone outside. This is a great opportunity to expand their lifestyle."

First in Illinois

Hadley recently had a misting system installed and is the first Illinois customer for MosquitoNix. She discovered the company while visiting a friend in Dallas, Texas, who had a system at the house, and she contacted the company about expanding to Illinois. She plans to become a franchisee with the company.

"There's such a demand here that I think we'll be busy for a long time," she said. "If you can help people be happy and have fun, what's a better job?"

Ken Davidson, director of sales and marketing for MosquitoNix, said the company began in 2003 and has continued to grow. Part of the company's success, he said, is providing a good product and helpful customer service while striving to be environmentally friendly.

"We're very good stewards of our chemicals," he said.

How it works

Those chemicals include pyrethrum, which is derived from Chrysanthemums, a synthetic solution, and multiple, 100-percent-natural eco solutions made with rosemary, Sassafras and other natural oils.

Each system uses one-quarter-inch tubing that is configured to fit each customer's yard and needs, Davidson said, and the average cost is $3,000. The solution is stored in a 55-gallon drum and is controlled by a system that mists the area three to four times a day for 30 to 45 seconds, creating a perimeter that guards against mosquitoes.

"It can be used immediately," Davidson said. "And you'll see a dramatic change in a day or two. It's a permanent solution, not a temporary solution."

Pet friendly

The chemicals are safe for people and most pets, Davidson said, and help protect dogs and cats from ticks and fleas. The system also limits the risk of mosquito-born illnesses.

Along with making sure families are protected, MosquitoNix gives people their backyards back, Davidson said.

"People spend a lot of money on their backyards, but they can't spend time out there because of mosquitoes," he said. "We're the exclamation mark on people's backyards."
