Business Owners Nationwide Urged To 'Stamp' Out The Latest Postal Rate Increases
Money Mailer Leading Letter Writing Campaign Against ‘Stamp Tax’
Money Mailer, one of the country's leading direct mail advertising companies, is urging business owners nationwide to voice their opposition to the United States Postal Service's latest rate increase proposal which was filed on April 8, 2005.
The Postal Service is seeking to raise all postal rates by five percent to six percent to be effective as early as January 2006. This increase is in addition to a second, regular cost of living type rate increase to be sought next year.
The Postmaster General's only reason for making this request is to raise funds to make a $3.1 billion escrow payment due for civil service retirement costs next year. This "escrow" was created when Congress realized that stamp payers had already over funded the costs for civil service retirees. Although Congress promised to fix the escrow, this has not taken place.
According to Beth Swade Thomas, director of marketing for Money Mailer, "We believe that this double payment is unfair to postal rate payers and the many small businesses that rely on mail to reach customers. For this reason, we are urging business owners to contact their congressional representatives and voice their concerns about this unnecessary and burdensome stamp tax."
Money Mailer recommends the following steps for anyone interested in contacting their elected officials:
1. Send a letter to the two United States Senators that represent your state and to the Congressman that represents your business. If your home is in a different district than your business contact, contact your home Congressman as well.
2. If you do not know the names of your United States Senators or your Congressman, and you need an address for them, here is a web site you can visit to access this information: http://postcom.org.
3. Send your letter by regular mail or fax it to the official's office. Do not rely on e-mail. Many elected officials ignore their e-mails. Fax and first class mail is best.
4. You can use the printed letter but PLEASE add something after the second paragraph to personalize it. Describe how postal costs affect you and your customers. Personal touches are much better than form letters.
5. Encourage your employees to write letters, too. Your elected officials need to know how excessive postal rates could hurt you and neighborhood businesses!
