Rancho Bernardo Fitness Together Sponsoring “Paddle for the Battle”

Fitness Together of Rancho Bernardo, Calif. is sponsoring 1,200-mile “Paddle for the Battle” kayaking fundraiser in support of the American Cancer Society.

Bob Wilson, husband of Fitness Together of Rancho Bernardo owner Dona Wilson, and partner Bill Sims have been training for months in preparation for the kayak journey they are calling "Paddle for the Battle." The pair plans to travel around the Baja California peninsula, from Tijuana, Mexico to La Paz, Baja California Sur in efforts to raise $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.

"Bill and I are passionate about kayaking, but kayaking for a great cause like the American Cancer Society is a true joy,” said Wilson. “And we could not have attempted this without the huge support of the Fitness Together staff and my wife for their fundraising efforts on our behalf and their support in general.”

Wilson’s mother passed away of pancreatic cancer and his mother-in-law is battling lung cancer. “We have all been affected by cancer in some way,” said Wilson. “And Bill and I just want to make our small contribution to help in finding a cure.”

Expecting to cover about 30 miles per day without the benefit of land or sea support, the duo estimates their paddling journey will take approximately 35 days. Weather permitting, they will leave shore in May.

Wilson and Sims train offshore three days a week. Wilson also trains several times a week at Fitness Together of Rancho Bernardo where he works on building his strength and endurance in preparation for the trip.

Checks should be made payable to the American Cancer Society. All donations benefit the American Cancer Society, with full expenses for Paddle for the Battle independently funded by Wilson and Sims.
