Franchise News Release: Waco, TX - (Aug-27-2003) Women In Trades Program to be Offered as Night Course, Sep. 22-Dec. 17Texas State Technical College of Waco and The Dwyer Group are teaming up for the third time to offer the Women In Trades program, this time as a night course, from Sept. 22 - Dec. 17. It will give students a much more flexible schedule, said Dina Dwyer-Owens, president and CEO of The Dwyer Group. During past WIT classes, a lot of women could not enroll because of the 8 to 5 class time and the demands of their existing jobs and families. Classes will be held on the TSTC campus every Monday and Wednesday, Sep. 22 - Dec. 17, from 6 - 9 p.m. Women who enroll will learn skills in plumbing and drain cleaning that may help them pursue a career in the field. Graduates willing to relocate will also increase their chances for the right job opportunity. The idea for the WIT program originated from Dwyer-Owens as a way to open doors for more women in the financially rewarding and stable trade services field. This course is perfect for women who feel trapped in a low-paying job or want a more challenging career, said Dwyer-Owens. This night course will allow them to see if it's something they want to pursue full-time. And it will give them the kind of training that good companies seek in new employees. Cost for the course will be $350 per student, and scholarships are available through The Waco Foundation for students who qualify. You can enroll by contacting David Meine with TSTC's Continuing Education department at 254-867-3113 or 800-792-8784, ext. 3113. Applications can be picked up at TSTC and at The Dwyer Group. Topics covered in the WIT program will include: Plumbing Tools, Safety on the Job, Fixtures, Backflow, Traps, Water Heaters, Sewage Pumps, Sewer & Drain Cleaning and Customer Service. Each student who completes the WIT program also will receive 80 hours towards her journeyman's license as a master plumber.
