Comfort Keepers Franchise Meeting the Changing Needs of the Growing Senior Population

Facing the challenges and opportunities associated with working with seniors is a key to the growing business of in-home care. Comfort Keepers Franchising, Inc. (CKFI) intends to stay in the forefront with those needs by encouraging owners to become Certified Senior Advisors (CSA).

Comfort Keepers, an international Franchise that provides in-home care services such as companionship dressing and grooming guidance, meal preparation, grocery shopping, light housekeeping and incidental transportation services to seniors. Recently, CKFI has implemented an initiative to encourage its owners and their employees to become certified in advising seniors in regards to their health and health care options.

Thanks to a program overseen by the Society of Certified Senior Advisors (SCSA), Comfort Keepers can undergo extensive training regarding the health, financial and social needs of seniors to become CSAs.

"The health, financial and social needs of seniors are different and more complicated than those of any other age group. CKFI encourages individual owners to become CSAs to ensure that they stay abreast of these issues with ongoing education, training, support and communication important to those of us dedicated to serving seniors," said Monique Kahkonen, human resource manager for CKFI and a CSA.

Individuals certified as a CSA are better prepared to face the challenges and opportunities associated with working with seniors, specifically in regards to their health and health care options. In addition to the initial training, CSAs complete continuing education emphasizing ethical practices when working with seniors.

CKFI has demonstrated its commitment to providing the best possible in-home care for seniors by requiring that all of its franchise business consultants (FBCs) become certified. The FBCs provide ongoing support to owners throughout the U.S. With the CSA certification, the FBCs are better able to address questions from owners about senior related issues. In addition, the FBCs will be able to provide extended knowledge and expertise about senior issues and training for owners.

The need for personal caregivers throughout the United States is greater today than at any other point in history. Currently, there are more than 34 million Americans over the age of 65, and this number is expected to double in the next 20 years as baby boomers enter into their retirement years. Many of these seniors need assistance with the activities of daily living.

The senior demographic shift requires an educated response in how professionals work with seniors. "With more people living longer, we are seeing changes in how seniors function in our society," added Kahkonen.

"This is an ongoing commitment from CKFI and Comfort Keepers owners to provide the best possible care for seniors."
