Latte and a Tutor? College Nannies & Tutors Opens New Shorewood, MN, Location that Challenges the Concept of How Students Learn

When most of us were kids, tutoring was done in the dingy backroom of an old office building, the unused supply room of a school, or in a teacher’s basement rec room. Parents and children waited for what seemed like an eternity on a broken-down couch or in a hot car. With the opening of the new College Nannies & Tutors Learning Center in Shorewood, MN, all that has changed. A waiting area that looks and feels like the comforting interior of a North Woods cabin, complete with stone fireplace, overstuffed hickory furniture, and hundred-year-old plank flooring welcomes parents and students. Free bottled water, juice, snacks, and a selection of coffees; tea, and cocoa are next to a reading library filled with reading materials and current periodicals for children and adults. An e-mail station, light jazz playing on the stereo, a bright, friendly staff greeting each visitor and a rewards store for students featuring i-pods, cell phones, books, toys and snacks completes the center’s waiting area. Peter Lytle, the company Chairman, said, “We want our students and parents to feel at home. We don’t want to look like just another tutoring center or school. We demand that our learning environments stimulate the minds and souls of our students and give our clients a place to feel refreshed”. He said: “There is a reason businesses theme their locations with entertaining environments. Our reason is to break up the ordinary and change the paradigm. We want kids and parents to realize we are not just another tutoring center and that their experience is not going to be ordinary.”

Once you step into the teaching areas, large, quiet, climate-controlled rooms featuring state-of-the-art technology and educational systems ease you into the company’s highly successful learning process. Each tutoring room as well as the hallways feature artifacts to stimulate the student’s mind. Among the displays are original newspapers announcing the Hindenburg explosion, and the sinking of the Titanic, full-size climbing packs loaded with crampons and ice axes, a whitewater kayak, and a racing bike used in the Tour De France are just examples. The tutors are college students and recent college graduates who are all certified tutors or teachers and who focus on each student’s needs, ranging from homework help to science, math, reading and college prep testing.

College Nannies & Tutors has four locations in Minnesota and one in Phoenix, AZ. Joe Keeley (co-founder) was winner of the 2003 Global Student Entrepreneur Award in for the concept. College Nannies & Tutors focuses on providing families with tutors and in-home child development specialists. The company’s motto: “ We foster a child’s happiness and success through academic and developmental growth.” In 2005 the company announced it would begin to expand through franchising. According to Joe Keeley, the new Shorewood location is the company’s Retail franchise prototype. He believes this environment will produce a new generation of learning centers and a become a gold standard for learning center design throughout the United States. Keeley stated that “Children learn faster and they learn easier when they have individualized tutoring or developmental support, in a fun and focused environment, supported by a person that is very focused on just their needs. When we did our educational research we discovered the learning environment is as important as the systems used to teach. We found more students studying in the local coffee shop and more students looking for comfortable non-threatening environments to do homework in, and realized that we need to make our centers closer to those environments they were seeking.”
