Franchise News Release: Hartland, WI - (Sep-29-2005) Batteries Plus Provides Hurricane Relief to Victims in MississippiBatteries Plus – the largest U.S. retail chain focused on the expanding $20 billion battery category – shipped 3,200 hearing aid batteries and 540 batteries for glucose meters to the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Center (MHRC) in Jackson, MS for hurricane victims last week. The value of the merchandise is $5,724.60. Also, several Batteries Plus franchisees from among the 248-store system will also be sending donations to the MHRC. In addition, employees who work at Batteries Plus home office in Hartland, Wisconsin raised $2,505; Batteries Plus, LLC, donated $1,000; and CEO Russ Reynolds personally donated another $1,000, for a total of $4,505 – making the total contribution of cash and merchandise donated $10,229.60, not including individual franchisee donations. With the hurricane season still in full force, area residents seek to stock up on batteries and flashlights and other battery-related products, Batteries Plus offers several tips to help consumers make the best purchasing decisions. “Whenever there’s a weather emergency or natural disaster, people tend to think more about being prepared, regardless of whether they’re directly affected,” Reynolds said. “Part of our responsibility as battery experts is to educate consumers about what products they should have on hand for storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and other emergencies.” Batteries Plus recommends consumers have the following batteries and other battery-related items on hand in the event of a power outage or natural disasters: A flashlight with alkaline batteries (alkaline batteries typically have a shelf of life of 8-10 years, so it’s good to have plenty on hand). In addition to at least two AA flashlights, you should have a lantern-style flashlight or a larger flashlight using two or three D-size batteries to give off more light and for a longer period of time. - Have at least two to three sets of backup batteries for every item that requires batteries. - A battery-powered weather radio and/or transistor radio. - Have a good power backup system attached to your computer (smart to do at any time, not just emergencies). - A power inverter, which enables you to power your TV or other electronic items from your car if necessary. - Candles with matches (for use in situations where you don’t want to unnecessarily drain batteries, but need light). - Bottled water and non-perishable food to feed the family for a day or two About Batteries Plus Batteries Plus is the nation's largest retail chain of its kind, offering a comprehensive selection of batteries, battery-related products and technical support that meet growing battery demands for consumer and commercial customers. In addition to thousands of batteries, stores also feature a Tech Center that is equipped to design, assemble, rebuild, and test custom battery packs. Accounts include Fortune 500 companies, manufacturers, other retail channels, local municipalities, fire and police departments, the armed forces and school districts. Its product line includes batteries for both the common and hard-to-find items that are traditionally not available at other retail stores. Currently, Batteries Plus has over 248 open locations in 39 states and Puerto Rico and 127 additional stores in development. The fast-growing Franchise company projects to have 400 stores by 2007.
