It was this revelation that led him to pursue a career in the information-technology (IT) industry, and shortly thereafter his journey began in earnest when he acquired employment with a large telecommunications company in Columbus, Ohio. For the next 10 years he gained valuable experience by working with various IT hardware, and it was this expert knowledge that led him to a new job.

His next employer, Nortel, gave him the opportunity to wear a multitude of hats. Over a 15-year span, he served in the marketing and customer-service departments, and spent a considerable amount of time as a technical trainer for DSL-based optical equipment as well as routers and switches. After parting ways with Nortel in 2001, Carpenter became an independent training consultant, which allowed him to have a one-to-one relationship with his clients and provide unparalleled customer service.
